➵ UXMAL ➵ . . Uxmal Mayan Ruins: the most beautiful ruins you've never heard of. The perfect day trip from nearby Mérida at only an hour's drive, we were blown away by the beauty of these ruins waiting for those willing to head deeper into the Yucatán. Why haven't you heard of it? Probably because you've heard of its more famous neighbor, Chichen Itza, a bucket list item for nearly everyone headed to the Riviera Maya. But keep going past Chichen Itza and further into the Yucatán jungle, and what a reward awaits. 🧡 . . We arrived at 8:30am on a recent weekday (half an hour past opening time) and had the UNESCO World Heritage site nearly to ourselves for the first hour. Even when more people arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves with plenty of breathing room - easily less than half of the crowds we encountered at Chichen Itza a few days later. While Chichen Itza is a bucket list item for a reason and worth seeing, we found Uxmal to be a more peaceful, immersive and overall enjoyable experience. 👌🏻👌🏼 . . The verdict? If you're headed to Mérida already, a visit to Uxmal is 100% a must. Go right at opening time - 8am - for the best, most peaceful experience. Heading to the Riviera Maya? While Uxmal will be too far for a day trip (at least a 4-hour drive from anywhere on the coast) it's absolutely worth seeing if you can squeeze in a 2 or 3-night side trip to Mérida, capital of the Yucatán. From cave swimming to cave dining. 😎 Well, almost. While we didn't dine here, we did enjoy wandering through this 10,000+ year old cavern-turned-restaurant & bar in Playa Del Carmen. Alux Restaurant, pronounced "A-loosh," is named after the legend of the Aluxes: mischievous Mayan elves inhabiting such underground spaces as caves & cenotes, appearing only at night to engage in playful shenanigans and general mischief. Easily the most unique dining experience in Playa Del Carmen, make a res for dinner or you can do what we did - pay $150 pesos (roughly $8 USD) for a self-guided tour of the maze-like cavern, house cocktail included. (Tip: the house margs are excellent.) While we didn't spot any aluxes, we were privy to stalagmites, stalactites, bats, even a mini-waterfall, resulting in an otherworldly experience all the same. 💫📍@alux_fine.dining_playa #travelinglamas #aluxrestaurant #playadelcarmen . . .
