Some travel experiences are more special than others, and for us one of these experiences was to Cambodia's Tonlé Sap Lake and its many ethnic Vietnamese floating villages. An aerial look at one of Cambodia's many ethnic Vietnamese floating villages on the Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. A peaceful and majestic sight, yes, but we didn't realize that these communities are actually forced to live on the water due to denied citizenship and thus, lack of land rights stemming back to the forced deportations of ethnic Vietnamese during the Khmer Rouge era. Deportations which, among other losses, resulted in the loss of ability to prove Cambodian origins. When these families started returning to their home country of Cambodia in the 80s, they found themselves stateless as they cannot prove citizenship. No citizenship = no rights to own or live on land, however as it turns out there are no regulations in regards to living on water. Living a life in perpetual floating limbo, hundreds of thousands of ethnic Vietnamese currently live in these communities - subject to poor conditions, few opportunities and even arbitrary taxes, among numerous other challenges. . . There is an excellent piece written by Ben Mauk for The NY Times on the current state of Cambodia's ethnic Vietnamese, who explains it well: . . "Most ethnic Vietnamese in the country continue to feel that they are Cambodians of Vietnamese origin. They refuse to give up hope that someday their Cambodian identity will be accepted in the country they call home. Instead, with somewhere between 400,000 and one million members, and virtually no international calls for Cambodia to uphold its own nationality laws, they are arguably one of the largest and least-supported stateless populations in the world." . . . We almost skipped visiting Tonlé Sap lake due to time restrictions during our recent visit to Cambodia, but are so glad we didn't. Found my ride. 😎 . . . Living that tuk-tuk life at Angkor Wat. ✌🏻✌🏼 While Alberto didn't actually drive the tuk-tuk (next time babe 😘), Sanny - our real driver - was impressively skilled in scooting us all around the sprawling grounds of Angkor. Tuk-tuks are quick, efficient and affordable, not to mention covered which is critical with the hot Cambodian sun. Other methods of transport throughout Angkor Wat include bicycle, private car and of course - tour bus, but we feel taking a tuk-tuk is the way to go. Unless you really want air-conditioning (can't say we weren't tempted!) and then you'll want to go with a car. . . . Feelin' those tomb raider vibes. ✌🏻✌🏼 . . . It's easy to see why Ta Prohm is one of the most popular temples at Angkor Wat - made famous when this particular spot appeared in a scene with Angelina Jolie in the original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Now more commonly referred to as "Tomb Raider Temple" or even just "Jungle Temple," the entire site has been reclaimed by the jungle after laying abandoned since the 15th century. Largely unrestored, centuries-old ruins stand intertwined with towering strangler fig trees (like the one you see here in the pic), beautiful banyons and other wild overgrowth. It's an incredible sight and really makes you appreciate the juxtaposition of man vs. nature. Easily our favorite temple out of the ones we visited at Angkor Wat. 🇰🇭🧡 . . . *PRO TIP* Arrive right at opening time (7:30am) - if not just before - and you'll beat many of the crowds. ➳ Angkor Thom South Gate 💫 ➳ . . One of the 54 figures of Devas (Guardian Gods) lining one side of the road extending from the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire. Or as you know it now, Cambodia. 🇰🇭 On the other side? 54 figures of Asuras (Demon Gods) together playing out a famous Hindu myth of creation - although Angkor Thom (as with the rest of Angkor Wat city) later became Buddhist. ➳ Welcome to the jungle. 😎 ➳ . . . Soaking in a moment of solitude amongst the jungle-taken ruins of Ta Nei at Angkor Wat. Similar in feel to the popular Ta Phrom (made famous from the original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) but without the crowds, this small temple is absolutely worth a stop during your visit to Angkor Wat.
