🌴 JUNGLE VIBES 🌴 . . . Most people know of the popular Gran and Dos Ojos cenotes in Tulum, but we were happy to discover this nearby, lesser-known cenote which is equally beautiful. 💙 Cenotes (pronounced say-no-tay), are natural, water-filled sinkholes held sacred by the ancient Mayans, who believed they were sacred portals to the underworld. About 30 minutes north of Tulum, Cenote Cristalino boasts stunning, crystal clear water, numerous areas to explore, and hardly any crowds on a recent Saturday morning. In fact, we enjoyed the entire place to ourselves the full first hour (opening time is 8am). This cenote is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, and even has a jumping platform for the adventurous. Enjoying poolside fireworks in the Riviera Maya to ring in September 16th, Mexico's Independence Day. 🇲🇽🎉 (NOT to be confused with Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates a victorious battle when the Mexican town of Puebla defeated the French on May 5th, 1862.) 📚 Here's a little history lesson on Mexico's independence from Spain: . . . "Mexican Independence Day celebrates an important date leading up to the war with Spain, September 16, 1810. The Grito de Dolores (“the Cry of Dolores,”) created a rallying cry for liberation when a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church in the town of Dolores and delivered a rousing speech calling the Mexican people to fight against their Spanish rulers. Over a decade of war later, the territory known as New Spain achieved its independence as the Mexican Empire on September 28, 1821. Mexican Independence Day is marked by an assortment of parades, concerts and other patriotic displays. On the eve of the holiday, the Mexican president always reenacts the Grito by ringing the same bell Hidalgo rang from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City."
