Your top 10 edit for going Jurassic, literally.

On a recent summer adventure to Indonesia, my cousins and I embarked on a two week excursion to discover the country’s best-kept islands (amongst a mere 17,508 in total). First up? Komodo Island, one of three islands making up Komodo National Park – an off-the-beaten-path oasis tucked away in the Flores Sea about 290 miles east of Bali. A modern day Jurassic Park, the island is home to over 4,000 endangered Komodo Dragons (the world’s largest lizard), taking residence among rusty-red volcanic hills, savannah vegetation and lush forests. While there are no hotels on the island nor is camping permitted, you can take an epic day trip from nearby Labuan Bajo or for the seaworthy – overnight on the shores of Komodo in a snorkeling boat, diving liveaboard, or private boat charter.
Here, my top picks for what to pack on a day trip to Komodo, where you can embark on some serious dragon-hunting (viewing only, of course!), take a panoramic hike, snorkel the warm, coral pink waters of the famed Pink Beach, and more.
Forget the dragons – the heat on this island is the first thing to conquer. A trip to Komodo requires a lot of sunscreen (with extra SPF!) to avoid a sunburn while hiking, sunbathing or snorkeling in the tropical heat.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen, Broad Spectrum Spf 100+, 5 Oz. (pack of 2), $18.94
The vivid tones of the ocean’s blues will surely complement any suit, but what better way to get in the island spirit than with a palm-printed pick?
JOLYN Printed Brandon Fixed-Back Onesie in Sante Fe, $65.00
3. UV Protected Cover-Up
You’ll want all the sun protection you can get on Komodo, and a UV protected cover-up goes one step beyond. I’m loving Cabana Life’s, blocking 98% of UVA + UVB rays with 50+ UPF protection.
Cabana Life Bora Bora Embroidered Cover Up, $94.00
4. Waterproof Phone Case
Because you’ll want to document every moment while exploring this island paradise, including in the water.
JOTO Universal Waterproof Case Dry Bag Pouch for all Phone Dimensions, Blue, $9.99
5. Comfortable Walking Sneakers
With miles of hiking trails to explore (and out-of-this-world views to see), a pair of comfortable, sturdy sneaks is a necessity.
Women’s S Sport by Skechers Performance Athletic Shoes in Gray, $39.99
6. Facial Mist
Along with plenty of water, bring a travel-sized facial spritzer to keep your skin hydrated under the tropical sun. Your face will thank you later.
evian Natural Mineral Water Facial Spray Trio, 1.7 oz. TSA-Approved Travel Size (3 pack)
You definitely don’t want to arrive for your day trip and find out you’ve forgotten your shades. Make sure to bring a pair with at least 99% UVA/UVB protection, like Privé Revaux’s “Warrior” Aviators.
Privé Revaux Warrior Aviator Sunglasses with 100% UV Protection, $29.95
8. Sun Hat
Your final defense against the sun? An oversized sun hat – even better if it’s Instagrammable.
ASOS ‘Chase the Sun’ Oversized Floppy Straw Hat, $20.00
9. Bug Repellant
Mosquitoes are alive and well on Komodo Island, and you’ll want to bring ample amounts of bug repellant to avoid being their latest victim. Instead of a sticky, (and stinky) spray, try a skin-nourishing, chemical free stick like Dr. Fedorenko’s.
Dr. Fedorenko 2 oz True Organic™ DEET-Free Bug Stick™, $26.00
10. Emergency Travel Kit
Because you never know when you might be in a pinch.
Pinch Provisions’ Shemergency Travel Kit, $35.00, featuring 40 on-the-go essentials including lip balm, deodorant towelettes, tampons, blister balm, pain reliever, band-aids, safety pins, hand lotion, blotting tissues, a comb and more.
